BLOG INTERVIEW (Q and A)
Intro:

In a world driven by technology and innovation, individuals like Titani Manda stand out as catalysts for change. Hailing from Malawi, Titani recently completed a Bachelor's in Information and Communication Technology, majoring in Software Engineering at Daeyang University. However, his journey extends far beyond academic accolades. Titani's passion for technology isn't just a career choice; it's a gateway to transformation. In this exclusive interview, Titani shares his story, from the roots of his tech-driven ambitions to the groundbreaking Braille Pad project, illustrating his commitment to innovation with a purpose.

Q: Hi, Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

A: Hi, my name is Titani Manda, by the name you can obviously know that am African and Malawian to be specific. I have recently completed my bachelor’s degree in Information and Communication Technology majoring software Engineering at Daeyang University’s College of Information and Communication Technology

I have always wanted to study any program that is tech related, because back then I believed that it is where tech inventions and discoveries came from. So I wanted to be one of those people who invent something useful or make important discoveries. Then I chose ICT.

During my first year at Daeyang University, I learned the importance of purpose-driven actions, so I wanted my work to extend beyond academics and always have a positive impact to the world. This desire inspired the development of the Braille Pad. The project aligns perfectly with my aspiration to innovate and create solutions that make a difference.

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in technology?

A: I think my Inspiration came from the influence of family and early exposure to science and technology, as well as the impact of media. Because when I was growing up, my father pushed us to learning things more quickly, like writing, reading, counting and geographical knowledge. And sometimes he used to share fun facts, which most of them were science. At the same time most of the cartoons and live action movies I watched where sci-fi.

Q: Could you share details about the project/innovation you have worked on.

A: I have successfully fulfilled all the major projects in each semester as part of my academic curriculum. And celebrated numerous tech innovations and functions by Malawian tech establishments. The Braille Pad is the recent project I have worked on, briefly, it is a reading device/pad that can allows a visually impaired person to have access to any digital book.

Q: What challenges did you face during the development of your project?

A: Throughout the development process, I faced several challenges. The major challenge was sourcing components and ensuring compatibility. Specifically the main actuators, solenoids, due to their expense and the high cost of custom design. This made me use fewer solenoids and redesign the pad to address the component’s requirements, this required a great amount of time and effort. Other challenges included understanding the Braille language and its standards, and, researching practical technologies and interfacing all these together.

Q: From your perspective, what are the current technology trends that excite you the most?

A: Artificial Intelligence is very much exciting to me, and I believe it plays a significant role in making our life easier, and its applications are practical. Additionally, Internet of Things, 5G, and robotics are exciting trends. They all seem interconnected and collectively make a way for a connected and efficient world. While am still learning about these technologies, their potential excites me.

Q; How do you think your work contributes to the tech landscapes in Africa and the world?

A: My work serves as an opportunity for problem solving, particularly the Braille Pad project, fostering inclusiveness and accessibility. By bridging the accessibility gap, it makes the work more inclusive. My work attempts to promote the idea that technology should meet diverse needs and address global challenges.

Q: What advice would you give to young individuals aspiring to enter the tech industry, especially in Africa?

A: In Africa, there numerous challenges. My advice is for individuals to begin addressing the issues in their communities. Progress requires the joint effort of everyone.

Q: Can you share your future plans or projects you are currently excited about?

A: Am excited in working on projects that align with the current trends particularly AI and Robotics. While I cannot disclose the specifics, am eager to implement these ideas. Currently am working on refining my recent project, focusing on enhancing its functionalities and making it portable.

Q: Any final thoughts or message for our readers?

A: It takes collective effort to make a difference. So, I am open to collaborating with anyone who shares similar goals. On the same note, thank you to everyone who have supported me so far. Very much appreciated.
